DOOSAN Gallery New York
The 3rd DOOSAN Yonkang Arts Awards
DOOSAN Gallery New York is pleased to announce Antenna, a solo exhibition of Sangdon Kim, one of the recipients of the Third Annual DOOSAN Yonkang Arts Awards, from April 10th through May 15th, 2014.
This exhibition comprises of around ten new works that explore the source of various methodologies and phenomena in contemporary art.
The title of the exhibition Antenna derives out of establishing New York City as a kind of birthplace of civilization, for its influence is felt across the board in economics, culture, and society. So with countless buildings forming a "jungle" in Manhattan, the artist observed that Manhattan was performing the role of an antenna.
This exhibition's representative work Torma Antenna is made using the motif of Tibet's traditional tower(known as the Torma), which contains within it important historical records of Tibetans' prayers to their gods. The artist uses this to cleverly portray overlap in culture between nations of different civilizations, as well as the correlation between civilizations themselves. Through this, Kim brings to the forefront the disparity in Eastern and Western perception when viewing objects and images that have turned into symbols.
