The 1st DOOSAN Yonkang Arts Awards
DOOSAN Art Center DOOSAN Gallery is pleased to present Drawings 1998-2012, a solo exhibition by Meena Park from August 30th to September 27th, 2012. On display in the exhibition will be over 300 drawings from the 785 drawings the artist has created in the 15 years of her oeuvre, from 1998 to present in 2012.
Meena Park endlessly questions and challenges the essence of painting, expanding the territory of painting by exploring new ways of reading rather than traditional ways of representation. Park has established and expresses her own color system by collecting and researching colors, and strives to change the existing way of thinking through her paintings that play with 'anagrams', which creates new words by changing spellings, or with special computer font type called 'dingbat'. The works in this exhibition are unique drawings that use children's coloring pages, which is a learning tool with its own set rules and system. Park refuses to follow the commands given in the drawing pages, and goes on to transform them into paintings with her own system of subtlety, by overlapping the images, putting on stickers, and coloring with exaggerated colors. This exhibition provides the opportunity to meditate on over 300 of Park's drawing series created from her early art practice until today.
