The 2nd DOOSAN Yonkang Arts Awards
DOOSAN Art Center DOOSAN Gallery is pleased to present Linkage, the solo exhibition of Sojung Lee, a recipient of the 2nd DOOSAN Yonkang Arts Awards in 2011, from October 10 to November 7, 2013. Using the brush strokes and splashed ink of Korean painting, Sojung Lee auto-spontaneously draws organic and abstract images that are repeated and connected. Although no specific shapes are expressed in Lee's artworks, at times, images resembling parts of the human body or vegetation are revealed. This exhibition presents artworks initiated from her individual inquiry into whether it is possible for her to re-represent the lost and forgotten images in the midst of her existing works.
Sojung Lee generates nonverbal, individual narratives while continuing to ask herself how the ambiguous shapes that she has unconsciously drawn are created and revealed. The new pieces in this exhibition are painted by tracing back the lost images that the artist auto-spontaneously created in the past beyond the images - the structure of a painting(assembly diagram) and manual code(instructions) - that she had previously depicted in her work. In the midst of the sentiment and emotion that she felt at the time a painting was being created, she symbolically embodies clues, finally uncovered when she recalled the memory of her hands functioning, with words such as that hour, that song, that snowfield, that reconciliation, that interpreter, and that audience, within the frame. Words and symbols appearing in Sojung Lee's works become the impetus for a newly automatically created image, and also become a linking device to connect the past and present of her works and allow viewers to approach her works.
Sojung Lee (b.1979) received a B.F.A. in Korean Painting from Ewha Womans University and a M.F.A. in Oriental Painting in Seoul National University in Seoul, Korea. She has had a solo exhibition at DOOSAN Gallery New York (New York, US, 2013), Brain Factory (Seoul, KR, 2010), GALLERY2 (Seoul, KR, 2009), and Kumho Museum of Art (Seoul, KR, 2007).
